Contract: Renovation of the coal-fired power station
Location: Borssele
EPZ in Borssele is one of the largest producers of green power. The coal-fired power station produces electricity from biomass. GTI has renovated the entire power station. Four big projects were realised during a major shutdown.
Maintenance and overhaul
The renovation involved the overhaul or replacement of the boiler, turbines and parts of the fly ash installations. Each part of the power station was checked and, if necessary, replaced. Each component was also subjected to periodical inspection by the Boiler Inspection Department (Stoomwezen). These components now meet the requirements of the most recent environmental legislation.
Life extension
The most far-reaching activities in the 'life extension' project consisted of the replacement of the existing operating system. In addition, the controls of various components of the plant were replaced. Step by step we replaced the generator rotor of the high-pressure turbine and the hydrogen units used to cool the low-pressure generators. As a result of these modifications the components now meet current safety standards.
ATEX and Denox installation
During the stop the requisite modifications were realised so that the technical and mechanical equipment meets the ATEX (Equipment for use in potentially Explosive Atmospheres) guidelines that went into force in mid 2006. During this stop we also connected the Denox installation to the existing installation. All the activities were completed early in 2006 as a result of which EPZ's power station now meets the most recent environmental legislation and current safety standards.
