Zaandam renews the Juliana bridge for 15.7 million euro

Bunnik,  March 13, 2008

Work began on the construction of the new Juliana Bridge in Zaandijk in the first quarter of 2008. The contract for this project, worth 15.7 million euro, was awarded to BAM civiel NV/Hillebrand, which is working in a partnership with GTI Energy & Infra on the replacement of the existing rolling bascule bridge. The bridge will have a streamlined, light and slim appearance and will come into use in mid-2009.

GTI Energy & Infra has been charged with designing and executing the electro technical installations and the controls for the bridge, which will be monitored and controlled via a remote control system at the Port Office of the municipality. GTI has been able to deliver complex installation projects similar to this one both successfully and safely because of its broad multidisciplinary and technical expertise. GTI is known for its thorough integration of the various installations, including the hydraulic and machinery constructions. Of the total sum, GTI's contribution is in the region of 1.5 million euro.

The province of North Holland opted for a new development because the existing Juliana Bridge had reached the end of its life. The bridge, built 72 ago for the sum of NLG 200,000, no longer meets the stringent safety requirements currently in force due to the heavy traffic loads on the bridge. Aside from its slim appearance, the designers, Royal Haskoning Architects, have provided the new Juliana Bridge with a separate bridge for cyclists and pedestrians. The headroom has been increased by more than one metre and a greater bridge opening has been provided for. In addition, two separate ancillary navigation passes will be installed for recreational craft. The length of the new bridge with its ancillary bridges will span about 175 metres over the Zaan river. These well thought out additions no doubt will have a positive effect for road traffic and navigation services while also contributing to safety.
