GTI secures contract with Dutch Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management for renovation of Schiphol Tunnel
Bunnik, March 18, 2008GTI Energy & Infra together with its partner Ooms Construction has secured a contract worth in the region of 8 million euro for the renovation of the second Schiphol tunnel. Both the EM installations in the Schiphol tunnel and the asphalting on the A4 and A5 are due for overhaul this year. The plan provides for strict working hours in the tunnel tubes to ensure that the traffic flows and access to the airport are affected as little as possible. The installations must be up and running by 28 November 2008.
"This is a complex job that must be completed within a short time frame and must result in the minimum of inconvenience", says Ruud Majenburg, Member of the Executive Team and General Manager at GTI market segment and specialist companies: "Only two groups of contractors tendered for this project, because of the high level of risks involved, coupled with the performance requirements and the complexity of the job". "Some ten years ago, GTI Energy & Infra secured the contract for the installation of the second Schiphol tunnel and for renovation of the existing Schiphol tunnel, and we are proud to be in a position to assist in this new project."
This Design & Construct contract will augment the safety features of the tunnel in conformity with Part C of the Safety Guidelines for tunnel installations and systems. The performance-related contract with its bonus/malus clause will encourage the group of contractors to cause as little inconvenience to traffic as possible.
The principal works involved in improving the safety features in this traffic artery are the replacement of the tunnel lighting, the aid stations and the S.O.S. installations in the first Schiphol tunnel (East). In addition, the escape routes in all tunnel tubes will be provided with new safety features, while the public address system and the CO2 measuring system are to be replaced. A new control unit and central tunnel control system is to be installed. After commissioning in November, the final completion will take place in February 2009.
