GTI to realise Electromechanical Installations for Westrandweg (A5)

Bunnik,  August 28, 2008

GTI Energy & Infra has won the commission to design and realise the Electromechanical Installations for the new Westrandweg (A5) motorway to be laid near Amsterdam. The necessary changes to the Northwest Netherlands Traffic Control Centre are also included in this contract from the Directorate-General for Public Works and Water Management. This design & construct contract is worth EUR 25 million. Westrandweg will be a new section of motorway (A5) that will lead from the Raasdorp intersection on the existing A5 to the yet-to-be-built 2nd Coen Tunnel.

High-tech
GTI is responsible for providing the Electromechanical Installations on this approximately 10-kilometre-long stretch of motorway. To do this, the Westrandweg motorway will be fitted with detectors that indicate stationary traffic and unusual traffic behaviour. Ruud Majenburg, Member of the Executive Team and General Manager of GTI's market sector and specialist businesses: "Energy Efficiency - using energy as responsibly as possible - is an essential part of this order. It will be realised in this project by the application of dynamic lighting and by looking critically at the other users during the design."

Start of Work
This commission comprises a Phase and a Basic Agreement. GTI will start by making plans, based on the Phase Agreement, and will begin work on design activities as soon as the planned route for the Westrandweg is finalised, which is expected to happen in the middle of 2009.

Risk Management
Realisation of the technical work on and along this road and in the traffic control centre will take place in 2012. The link to the traffic control centre and the adjoining 2nd Coen Tunnel Project means that a great deal of attention is going to management of risks within traffic management.
