Akzo Nobel supplies a variety of pharmaceutical raw materials under the name Diosource, including steroids, synthetic peptides, heparin and biopharmaceuticals. The production of these chemicals at Akzo Nobel's modern plant in Oss involves fermentation. GTI built the process installation in which the fermentation takes place, all in line with ISO 9001 and GMP standards. We prefabricated part of the installation in one of our workshops and manufactured another section on the Akzo site. The system comprises 200 individual pieces of equipment and 18,000 metres of steel and stainless steel pipes (DN 15 to DN 300). We made around 5,000 of the welds orbitally using closed welding tongs and then employed a video endoscope to inspect the quality of the welds.
