Kizomba A

Contract: Electrical engineering, instrumentation and pipeline systems for Kizomba A
Client: Grootint B.V. (Heerema Zwijndrecht B.V.)
Completion: September 2003

The Kizomba A production platform built to order for Esso Angola will be situated off the Angola coast and used to extract oil from the so-called Kizomba A field. This drilling rig can be used to extract oil at a sea-water depth of 1,200 meters. The 80-metre square, 130-metre high platform weighs around 32,000 tonnes and is the largest ever built in the Netherlands. Construction was entirely outsourced to a joint venture between ABB Houston and Grootint B.V., which in turn subcontracted all the electrical engineering, instrumentation and piping systems to GTI.

Electrical engineering and instrumentation
The electrical engineering and instrumentation work involved supplying a mechanically complete installation, including installing, testing, and commissioning it and installing some five kilometres of primary cable, 16 kilometres of secondary steelwork, 250 kilometres of cable (including high-voltage, low-voltage and signal cable) and 15 kilometres of tubing.

Piping
The pipework involved:

  • preparation of 2,000 pipework drawings;
  • prefabrication and installation of around 10 kilometres of piping and pipe supports, including assembly at the Grootint yard in Zwijndrecht
  • heat treatment, preservation and interim storage;
  • rinsing and chemical cleaning of piping systems.
