St Radboud University Medical Centre
Client: St Radboud University Medical Centre
Location: Nijmegen
Contract: New construction at St Radboud UMC, the 'Vrouw en Kind' (Woman and Child) building and the eastern part of the Diagnostiekgebouw (Diagnostics building).
St Radboud University Medical Centre had grown substantially as a result of expansion and amalgamations. The various locations became fragmented and it was decided that to provide optimum accommodation would require renovation of the whole complex and the addition of new buildings. The rest of the buildings will be upgraded over a period of 15 years and GTI will be involved in this too. In this part of the project, GTI was jointly responsible for all the electrotechnical building-based installations in the Diagnostics building (11,000 m2) and the Woman and Child building (30,000 m2), including:
- control technology;
- power, light and emergency power installations;
- switching and distribution units;
- lightning protection and earthing;
- low-voltage installation;
- telematics work.
GTI was also responsible for the building management system and the electrotechnical work in medical areas such as laboratories and operating theatres in accordance with NEN 3134.
For this project, 95,000 m3 of concrete, 520 kilometres of data cable and 9,000 light fittings were used.
Logistical challenge
Limited storage space made it impossible to store materials in any quantity and they had to be delivered 'just in time'. This required tight planning, clear agreements with suppliers and well-coordinated project management.
Focus on patients
Working in a hospital environment makes heavy demands on personnel. Inconvenience to patients must be kept to a minimum. However, one of the key conditions of St Radboud UMC was that the project should be completed while the teaching hospital remained fully operational. GTI was able to guarantee continuity of operations while the project was under way.
