A series of new construction and renovation projects for the Leeuwarden Medical Centre were delivered in stages in July 2004, with GTI being responsible for the mechanical work. In all, 47,000 m2 of hospital floor space was replaced, upgraded or modernised, and this has made the centre one of the largest non-teaching hospitals in the country. The hospital had to remain operational at all times while work was going on. The new construction and renovation work included:

  • 20,000 m2 of new construction for nursing departments and outpatient clinics;
  • 5,000 m2 of new construction for intensive care and heart catheterisation rooms;
  • 15,000 m2 of renovation work on the hospital and operating complex;
  • 7,000 m2 of renovation work on the hospital?s nursing departments.


Work carried out
From September 2001 to delivery in July 2004, GTI was responsible for:

  • prefabrication and assembly of various piping systems;
  • engineering and assembly of complete medical installations (including two thoracic operating theatres); 
  • process analysis and modification of the entire power plant (central heating, steam and cooling); 
  • installation of a building management system; 
  • long-term cold storage; 
  • engineering and assembly of a sprinkler system for fire safety; 
  • supervision of subcontractors.
